ART

A summary of KS3 and its relevance

It is believed that maximum learning takes place when a pupil is engrossed in an activity which holds their attention, fires the imagination and challenges their intellect and practical skills at an appropriate level.

We believe Art and Design is important because:

  • it gives a pupil the chance to express ideas and feelings in visual form
  • artistic observation heightens perception
  • knowledge of the work of a range of artists, craftspeople and designers contributes to cultural understanding

A summary of the skills acquired

We aim to:

  • help pupil develop an enjoyment and appreciation of art and design.
  • develop pupil’s powers of observation, recording and interpretation.
  • increase pupil’s awareness and expertise in the use of art media.
  • enable pupils to gain confidence in their own viewpoints, artwork and style.
  • use art and design to enable pupils to deepen their intellectual and emotional understanding of themselves, their world and their place within it.
  • enable pupils to record from first-hand experience and imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work.
  • develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities
  • encourage pupils to reflect their own work and that of others.
  • improve the pupil‛s ability to control materials, tools and techniques
  • increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures.
  • develop increasing confidence in the use of visual arts and tactile elements and materials.
  • foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.
